Lower Sugar Glazed Bacon Wrapped Water Chestnuts

Delicious bacon wrapped water chestnuts are wrapped in bacon and coated in a tasty lower sugar ketchup and brown sugar based sauce.

Bacon wrapped water chestnuts are a long time retro favorite and for good reason. They are so tasty!

How to make bacon wrapped water chestnuts lower in sugar

I’ve made a few simple ingredient swaps to cut down on the sugar in both the ketchup and brown sugar. If for some reason you want to use regular ketchup and brown sugar, go for it! The amounts will stay the same.

Quick tip for prettier toothpicks (don’t make the same mistake I did)

Add your toothpicks after they have finished baking. I managed to forget that this time around, which is why my toothpicks turned out looking a wee bit charred. As long as you bake the chestnuts with the bacon seam side down, they should stay together just fine.

  • 2 cans (8 ounce each) water chestnuts drained
  • 2/3 cup lower sugar ketchup
  • 2/3 cup Splenda brown sugar blend or any other brown sugar substitute of your choice
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

  • Preheat oven to 400-f degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Alternatively, you could a broiler pan to avoid having grease pooled at the bottom of your pan, or use a 9×13" pan and lightly spray it with nonstick spray. Whichever way you go about it, please be advised that at the half way point of baking, if these amount of grease at the bottom of your pan bothers you, you should drain it off.
  • Open your cans of water chestnuts and drain. Count how many total and cut your bacon either into thirds or in half to accommodate. The amount of chestnuts can vary quite a bit which is why this step is advised. Wrap each cut piece of bacon around a water chestnut and place seam side down onto your baking sheet. Bake for 35 minutes.
  • Meanwhile, combine the ketchup, brown sugar blend and Worcestershire sauce in a small bowl. After the bacon wrapped chestnuts have baked for the directed 30 minutes, use a basting brush to coat them with prepared sauce. You could also just use a spoon and pour the sauce over evenly. Return to the oven for an additional 20 minutes. Add toothpicks are this point as they can be a bit messy. Serve warm.
