Kiddo Update - Summer 2012

It has been quite a long time since the last kiddo update. While Jam Hands is primarily about food, I do have some readers from way back who have seen my kids since they were born and a time or two a  year I like to give a little update. Here we go!

Mr. Jack  - Just turned 3

Likes: Anyone that knows Jack could answer this very easily. ANGRY BIRDS. All angry birds all the time! Angry angry angry! Birds birds birds!  He has t-shirts, stuffed animals, figurines, and of course the games on the computer (which he is playing in that first picture). The boy is crazy about the birds. He is very affectionate and full of life. He is a wild man.

Dislikes: Being bossed around by his sister.

Favorite thing to do which he is not supposed to: Getting into the pantry and raiding the snack shelf.

Funny Random: Confuses marshmallows and watermelons. Calls the watermelons growing in our garden "Marshmellons."

Miss Violet - About to turn 5

Likes: Drawing, gardening, playing outside, changing her clothes 10 times a day.

Dislikes: Being bossed around by her brother.

Favorite thing to do which he is not supposed to: Hiding things she likes under the couch. I have found all sorts of strange things under the couch. A loaf of sliced bakery bread, a bottle of shampoo, toys and more.

Funny Random: When she is mad she calls everyone by two names, except she uses her own middle name. For example, "Jack 'Lizabeth!" or "Mommy 'Lizabeth!"  I think, perhaps, she learned this from me? Hehe.

  1. Love the use of her middle name when she's mad at other people!

  2. Your kids are adorable. Thanks so much for stopping by with sweet comments. Have a great rest of the week!

  3. Ali 'Lizbeth, you need to give more kiddo updates! ;) This was so cool, I loved it. Your kids sound pretty awesome.

  4. I am one of those readers from a million years ago, so thank you for the update! -Madeline (Formerly of Everything Rachael Ray, which I have become bored with, so now at

    1. Madeline!!! How nice to see you again :) I am off to bed but I will check out your new site tomorrow. Please comment and come back again :)

Neiman Marcus Chicken Salad

This tasty Neiman Marcus Chicken Salad has a secret ingredient that gives the texture of the salad a wonderfully creamy texture. What is it ? Freshly whipped cream folded into the chicken, almond and grape salad. It works and it is wonderful.

Serve on a bed of curly lettuce, with crackers or on a croissant. Enjoy!

Mexican Dorito Casserole

I'm not even gonna pretend that this anything but what I call "Trash Food." Every once in a while trash food is the best kind of food, comforting and totally delicious. Mexican Dorito Casserole fits that description perfectly. Enjoy!

Stick of Butter Rice

This delicious side dish was a hit at my house. The raving over this recipe was intense. To put it mildly, everyone loved it.

Personally, I felt that the amount of butter could be cut down a bit in this recipe. I'll leave that up to you guys to decide what you think is best. I think I would go with 1/3 cup and see how that goes next time around. If you have unsalted butter I'd also recommend that you go with that, instead of the standard salted butter. Between the condensed soup and broth, it can get a bit salty.

Note that for this recipe you want to use standard white rice, not instant rice. Enjoy!

American Flag Strawberry Poke Cake

Get ready for an insanely delicious and patriotic dessert, an American Flag Strawberry Poke Cake. This is a fun one to have the kiddos help decorate. We've made this cake for a few forth of July celebrations now and it is always a huge hit.

An alternative and even simpler way of making this cake would be to use raspberries instead of the strawberries for the decoration on top. You could even use raspberry Jell-o as well. Enjoy!

Big Crumb Coffee Cake with Rhubarb

I tried out this delicious recipe from the wonderful blog Smitten Kitchen. The only thing I forgot was to add a dusting of powdered sugar on top. I love rhubarb so this was a winner. Enjoy!
