Marshmallow Fruit Salad

I had this delicious fruit salad a lot growing up. A typical 5 Cup Fruit Salad is very similar, but this fruit salad utilizes fresh strawberries and bananas, and omits the coconut. Totally delicious and comforting.

I am using my best guess on amounts for this recipe. Please use your best judgment and increase or decrease the fruit amounts listed to suit your tastes.

Marshmallow Fruit Salad
Makes 8-12 servings

Ingredients

  • 1 large can pineapple tidbits – drained
  • 2 small cans mandarin oranges – drained
  • 2 large sliced bananas (optional, if you want it to keep longer leave them out)
  • 1 pint sliced strawberries
  • 1 package mini marshmallows
  • 1 small container sour cream (8 oz)

Directions

1. Mix all ingredients and let it sit in the fridge for a short while so flavors can develop.

Recipe from my mom.

  2. I make a salad similar to this, but do not add the strawberries or bananas…I will now. Found you on Pintrest, and am now following your blog. Patsy

  3. Top notch! Made this recipe this morning for our Easter dinner later. Excellent already – can't wait to taste it after the flavors have had a chance to blend & develop. Thanks!

  4. I didn't expect to see sour cream. I think I will try yogurt instead for this. I want it to be a semi-sweet treat.

    1. KassCeeBee – Believe me, it is a sweet fruit salad with the sour cream. Let me know how the yogurt works out, I've never tried that 🙂

  5. Yes it is a very sweet fruit. My grandma has made this for 30yrs+ and at first I was always nervous to try it because of the sour cream, but when i did i had 2 bowls of it because it was AWESOME! Yogurt will just make it to sweet.

  6. It's been a favorite of our family for more than 30 years. I like to add crushed walnuts. Make a lot of it, because it's even better the next day!

  7. My family has been addicted to this for more than 30 years. I like to add crushed walnuts. Make a lot of it. It's great as a dessert or as a side at lunch and dinner.

  8. Had this growing up as well, but cool whip instead of sour cream. I hate cool whip but would try it with yogurt as someone else mentioned. We had walnuts in ours growing up too.

  9. I'm so glad I found this! My Mom made this for every holiday, mostly because it was my favorite. I always asked her what was in it, she would never tell me for fear I would hate it because it was sour cream. I would go to other friends houses for dinner and they would have 'fruit salad'. Nope, not anywhere near as good as moms…ever. As an adult she finally told me the secret ingredient…lol. Still love it. She passed away February 5, 2016 without passing the recipe down, I have looked EVERYWHERE!!!! Thank You, Thank You, Thank You!!! Can't wait to try it!

    1. Michele- What a sweet and funny story. People usually don't trust this recipe, they always want to use yogurt instead of sour cream. But it really is delicious. I think yogurt would be way too sweet. Sour cream rocks 🙂 I hope you enjoy!

    2. I like mine with dream whip. I use 3 packs of dream whip and a cup of milk with just a cap of vanilla. It tastes great!! I am open to trying different varieties so I will try the other ways too, but try the dream whip you'll love it!!

    1. That would be fine, but I would recommend to not add the banana slices until it is much closer to serving time. If you weren't able to do that, I would omit them and it is still delicious without them.
