While maple extract wasn’t called for in the original recipe, I added it as an optional ingredient to the cookie dough for those that would like that maple flavor in both the cookie and the frosting.

Equipment

  • Baking Sheet
  • Parchment Paper Sheets

Ingredients

For the cookies:

  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1/2 cup butter softened
  • 1 1/4 cups brown sugar firmly packed
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon maple extract optional, for extra maple flavor

For the frosting:

  • 1 1/4 cups confectioners’ sugar
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 4 Tbsp. pure maple syrup

Instructions

For the cookies:

  • Beat together shortening, butter, brown sugar, egg, vanilla and maple extract (if using) in medium bowl until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes. Mix in flour, baking soda and salt. Be sure to add the flour about 1/2 cup at a time and mix in between additions. Chill the dough for 30 minutes.
  • Preheat the oven to 350-f degrees. Shape dough into 1-inch balls or use a medium cookie scoop to portion out balls. Place 2-inches apart on a parchment lined baking sheet.
  • Bake 10 to 11 minutes or until golden brown. Remove to cooling rack after a few minutes.

For the frosting:

  • In a small bowl mix the sugar, extract and maple syrup until desired consistency. (I added a sprinkle of milk to thin out the frosting at this point as it was very thick.) Spread onto cooled cookies.

  3. Hi. Today, I tried the Amish brown sugar maple glaze cookies. Took your advise and added a squirt of maple syrup to the cookie mix. I cooked them for about 9 minutes. Absolutely delicious. I over bought brown sugar this past holiday season and needed to use it. These cookies will be a regular in my home. My grandaughter loves them too. Thanks! Chris B.

  4. Made these today for the second time! Love them! Baked in convection oven for 12 minutes! Nothing more Canadian than maple syrup!! Thanks to the Amish for delicious recipe! Will be making these again for sure!

  5. Made these for a cookie exchange and they were a BIG hit! I did not chill the dough or add milk to the icing. When I make them again, though, I will add maple syrup to the mix, like you suggested. I didn't get any maple flavor at all.

  6. Just made a batch of these and shared them with my parents. They are a really soft cookie and my dad really enjoyed them as he has dentures. I was not able to make the maple glaze due to be out of maple syrup. I did a very light drizzle of of chocolate glaze. Hope to soon make them with the maple glaze!

  7. Cant wait to try this recipe! My daughter tried it and said its her new favorite! I have a grandson who was just diagnosed with type1diabetes and I am struggling with figuring the carbs of foods. This ones states 27g carbs but 188kcal (I understand this to mean 188,000 calories… wow, haha!)Is there a typo here and is this 27G carbs per cookie? Can you help?

    1. Hi there! In this recipe kcal means the same thing as calories. the K in this doesn’t represent 1000, as with other numbers. So if you see Cal or KCal, they are the same thing. So each cookie would be 188 calories.

As for the carbs, that is indeed what the nutritional calculator figured. Feel free to use Splenda or other sweetened that is zero carbs instead if you need to cut back. Hope that helps.
