Puppy Chow

You know it. You love it. It is a childhood classic. Ready for the recipe?

Puppy Chow aka Muddy Buddies
Makes many servings


9 cups Chex cereal (any variety)
1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
1/2 cup peanut butter
1/4 cup butter or margarine
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 1/2 cups powdered sugar

1. Into large bowl, measure cereal; set aside.

2. In 1-quart microwavable bowl, stir together chocolate chips, peanut butter and butter. Microwave uncovered on High 1 minute; stir. Microwave about 30 seconds longer or until mixture can be stirred smooth. Stir in vanilla. Pour mixture over cereal, stirring until evenly coated. Pour into 2-gallon resealable food-storage plastic bag.

3. Add powdered sugar. Seal bag; shake until well coated. Spread on waxed paper to cool. Store in airtight container in refrigerator.

Stove-Top Directions: Into large bowl, measure cereal; set aside. In 1-quart saucepan, heat chocolate chips, peanut butter and butter over low heat, stirring frequently, until melted. Remove from heat; stir in vanilla. Pour mixture over cereal, stirring until evenly coated. Pour into 2-gallon resealable food-storage plastic bag. Add powdered sugar. Seal bag; shake until well coated. Spread on waxed paper to cool. Store in airtight container in refrigerator.

    Some family friends used to get dog food bags, empty them and carefully wrap the insides with saran wrap and butcher paper and give this treat out in the dog bags. So cute!!

  4. OH STOP – these are the absolute death of me. My brother and I got into a yelling match this year over them…he took them all and locked himself in his room.

  6. I love these!! We call them muddy buddies, not sure why. BUT, if you're really wanting them and don't have time to make them, bugles came out with a chocolate peanut butter variety and they are awesome!!! Thanks, I think I'll have to go buy some now.

  8. I love Puppy Chow! I made some last month and it was a double batch so I was asking a friend of mine if she wanted some, she asked me why I was offering her dog food! She had never heard of Puppy Chow before!! She really missed out in her childhood!

    (Some people also call it Muddy Buddies, I'm not sure, but I think Puppy Chow is a Midwestern thing….)
